Nine hardy Strollers met in Ormiston for a circular walk round the Winton Estate and parts of the Pencaitland Railway path.
Thankfully, the sun didn’t come out while we were walking, and the temperature was just nice. Heading east out of Ormiston, we joined the railway path for a short time passing the sign for one of the five pits which used to be here which was closed in 1914. We then turned right following the path into the Winton Estate and at the next signpost turned left, listening the Hibs players going through their paces at their training ground. Crossing over the Pencaitland Road we then stopped for a break at the junction with the Macmerry path where we were joined by several friendly dogs looking to partake of our snacks.
From
here we followed the track down between the fields squeezing into the bushes to
avoid the large tractor which took up all the track as it passed us. We then
joined the Pencaitland Road for a short bit and then headed west back to just
short of the north gate of the Winton Estate.
We
then returned to the railway path and turned right passing the site of Ormiston
Station and following the path for about half a mile before turning back down
to Ormiston and the end of the walk.
